Shown is a star trail exposure of the northern celestial pole including the constellation of the small dipper (above the pole). The sky's apparent rotation around the polar star during the long exposure produced the visible star trails. The image was exposed in March 1996, when Comet Hyakutake reached a very northern declination. The comet with its ion-tail is easily visible like a "long haired star" which is the literal translation of the original greek word Komêtes.
