Mars reaches its closest position to earth and its maximum brightness in January/February 2010. The time lapse shows Mars during the last opposition period in winter 2007/08. It is the brightest object in the field and finally setting behind the cloud banks. The snowy heights of the Black Forest were illuminated by a crescent moon from the opposite direction.
